5 Steps to Writing the Resume that Gets You the Job
Your resume is a very important document to us. Effective resumes get the results you want – obtain an interview and ultimately the job you applied for. So how do you produce a killer resume? Simply take a look at the checklist below.
1. Make your resume clearly position you as a person who can meet the needs of the employer
Imagine that your resume is an advertisement for a product and the product is YOU. Don’t ramble on and launch into a chronology of your career history. The reader will have perhaps no more than 20 seconds to scan through your resume so spell out your strengths clearly and quickly in an easy-to-read format.
2. Begin your resume with an objective statement
Make your objective statement show how you can add value to your employer by demonstrating that there is an obvious match between your skills and the company’s needs. Look at the job description in job advertisements for similar positions and make note of common requirements. Then craft your resume to reflect how your competencies fit the requirements.
3. Specifically outline your achievements as well as responsibilities
You may have probably included the main responsibilities of your job but that wouldn’t differentiate you from other applicants. To stand out, summarise job responsibilities in concise sentences and focus on providing information that details quantifiable achievements. Avoid vague statements such as “contributed to corporate communications” as it doesn’t reflect your actual contribution. Be specific: “promoted brand awareness and provided external communications which bolstered brand image, resulting in 40% increase in sales”.
4. Check your resume – is it easy to read, are there typos?
Be sure to proofread your resume many, many times. Make sure there are no misspelled words and that there are no grammatical mistakes. Assess the format and design of your resume – font size, font type, layout – to make sure that it is easy to read and that it highlights your strengths clearly. Remember, if your resume is disorganized and badly laid out, it may be discarded before the reader gets to your qualifications.
5. Trim off irrelevant information
Don’t bother listing your hobbies unless they support your qualifications. Leave out non-professional information such as political affiliations to avoid alienating the reader before getting an opportunity to meet up. Be concise and succinct in your descriptions so that the reader does not lose interest before your points come across.
